Winter the Dolphin Needs our Help |
By now most folks have heard about the baby dolphin that lost her tail due to an entanglement with fishing line off the coast of Florida. Steve McCulloch of Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution (HBOI) said that the entanglement was so severe that the loss of blood flow to the baby dolphin's tail actually caused auto-amputation.
"Winter", as this baby dolphin was so named by the staff at Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) where she is being cared for, has survived beyond everyone's expectations and initial predictions. When Whale Tails Tortilla Chips learned of the need for funding for the care and rehabilitation of this dolphin, living without a tail, we contacted both Steve McCulloch, Project Manager Marine Mammal Research and Conservation Program HBOI, and Dana Zucker, COO of CMA. Steve said " It appears the wave for Winter is building."Winter" and other stranded marine mammals require long-term care in an environment where they can be enriched, while they in turn enrich and inspire us. We both (HBOI and CMA) are committed to these efforts and appreciate your enthusiasm and support. I also want to thank you for sending us the case of Whale Tail Chips. They vanished in a instant and everyone enjoyed them. I must have been the only guy not to get some. I'll see Winter next week and send you some images as her progress continues." Dana Zucker commented by saying "Winter is a truly unique dolphin with a wonderful and gentle personality, who craves "people attention". Winter will become a spokes-dophin for wild dolphins to help prevent this from happening again through public education. We are in the process of raising funds for her care as well as the other stranded dolphins in our care. We need funds for our stranding center- as we rescue, rehab and release many marine animals throughout the year- in fact, CMA and HBOI together just successfully released 2 rehabilitated dolphins to their native environment in Florida Bay just last week, and afetr two-weeks of post monitoring... they both are in excellent condition and fully reintegrated into their marine environment. We too, look forward to Whale Tails Tortilla Chips is built on our slogan "Better for Dipping by Natural Design" and we can not think of a more perfect design for a tortilla chip when you want to move through bowls of your favorite salsa or guacamole dip. That is why Whale Tails Tortilla Chips will be lending our support to "Winter" this incredible little dolphin who is attempting to move through water without that perfect shape that she was born with. At Whale Tails Tortilla Chips we know that it is sometimes the carelessness of humans that cause these entanglements however we know it will also be the compassion and generosity of humans that will come to the aid of "Winter".
