Thank you for supporting Pro Peninsula's 2008 Summer Luanda through a donation of your delicious Whale Tails Tortilla Chips for the "Taste of Sand Diego." Guests raved about all of the dishes and your contribution helped to give the finishing touch on a wonderful atmosphere.
The Luanda was a fabulous success on all fronts. The event grossed over $36,000 from ticket sales, online donations, in-kind contributions and funds raised from the silent and live auctions, opportunity drawing and the giving cactus. We are thrilled with this outcome. Your generous donation helped us achieve that goal; thank you for being a part of this important evening!
Over 130 people attended from both the U.S. and Mexico, making the Luanda a truly binational event. We succeeded in reaching out to the San Diego community, bringing into our family new members and corporate sponsors. Last, and far from least important, the vent brought us all together to celebrate Pro Peninsula’s successes over the past seven years. Click HERE to view photographs of the Luanda.
Your participation has ensured the contribution of important programs and initiatives that have a significant impact on the lives and communities that make up the unique landscape of Sand Diego and the Baja California peninsula.
Pro Peninsula’s principle initiatives include:
Sea Turtle Conservation:
building an active sea turtle conservation network.
Coastal Conservation:
developing strong community organizations dedicated to protecting their coasts
Conservation Tourism:
fostering sustainable economic alternatives
Ocean Connectors:
crossing borders to create a shared sense of stewardship in youth.
As a sponsor of Pro Peninsula’s Luanda the success of this event, and all that it supports, is yours as well. We look forward to next year’s Luanda and hope to see you there!
Thank you on behalf of the Pro Peninsula family. ~Kama

Kids in Hawaii like Whale Tails
Dear Rick,
Congratulations on your success with Whale Tails Chips! We had them as snacks at our 2007 Whale Quest event in Kapalua for the participating elementary and jr. high children, and they loved them! Several of my thank you letters from the schoolchildren mentioned them, and I thought you would like to know.
Best of luck and we hope to see
you at Whale Quest sometime.

The Word from Down Under
First of all let me say congratulations on one of the “Earth Friendliest” products I have reviewed to date. I’m retired from economics and as such get involved in forecasting retail trends for various companies. I recently undertook a project that paired “Organic” and “Earth Friendly” companies with their major shareholders. I was shocked to discover who actually funds some of the more familiar names on the shelves as well as what in turn those profits support. In one case, a well-known “Organic” company was actually funded by a tobacco company, a petrol company as well as the leading developer of genetically modified foods. Good on you guys for doing the right thing! You have a great product and you’re a solid example of what business of, and for, the future should be.
~Peter Fitzgerald
Sydney, Australia
PS - Any plans for making it down this way?
Peter,
That must have been an interesting study. We are somewhat familiar with the associations you describe. It sure would be nice if labels told the whole story. It’s hard to find money to expand and I’m sure it’s easy to look the other way with your dreams of success on the line. It’s a difficult choice that each individual wrestles with every day on a smaller scale. The right choice isn’t always the easiest. The good news is that even though some of these companies are funded by questionable sources, they are still producing good products that are developing the demand for better food. We’re happy to be a part of that as well as we try to take it to the next level.

Sea of Cortez
Hello there,
I found your chips in a most unusual way. I was actually on a kayaking trip in the Sea Of Cortez. We were 13 days into the trip and for the last night we all brought a surprise. Julie, a good friend from college got all the attention when she rolled out 6 bags of Whale Tails and some avocados that by some miracle weren’t too far beyond ripe! Maybe it was the salt air, the sunburned head or the scenery but your chips were the best I’ve ever had. When we were done with the munch, Julie read us the bag – I mean here I was in one of the most beautiful places on Earth, eating a product that supports what I had been experiencing the last 2 weeks! Thanks for a job well done! I have my own business too and know it’s not easy but you've got my vote...and Julie's and Tim's and Lori's, Michael's, Mac's, Sally's and Olivia's!
PS - When I got home, I looked you guys up on the web. I’m impressed and depressed. Impressed at all you’re doing for whales and the ocean – Depressed that I can’t find you in stores nearby. If you’re coming to Northern California, I’ll tell everyone I know… Any plans?
~Matt Rossen
Mill Valley, California
Matt,
Sounds like a great trip and thanks for the kind words. I wish that all of our customers could get the kind of introduction to our chips that you did. There’s a big beautiful world out there and we all have the opportunity to play a role in keeping it around for the next generations to learn from and enjoy. Sometimes it’s as simple buying a bag of chips!
As far as getting Whale Tails in your neck of the woods, Ric & Terry are heading up to San Francisco next week to see what we can do about that. As a small start-up our resources are limited. It takes a while to get noticed but thanks to people like you, it’s happening! In the meantime, if you’re near Alameda, head down to the Crab Cove Visitors Center. It’s a cool place as well as our newest account. They’ll have our chips as well as a bunch of great ways to spend the day. Check them out at www.ebparks.org/parks/crab.htm

Whales spotted in Oklahoma
Hi Ric,
I wanted to let you know that your wonderful Whaletail chips were a big hit among many of the recipients of my gift which included your superb chips and what I believe could be the best salsa I've ever had from a local guy in Tulsa Oklahoma at mydadssalsa.com (his salsa is a lot better than his website). I actually ran out of salsa for a few recipients and just tossed them my extra chips and found they were a hit on their own. Your chips were so popular I've been asked where they can be purchased locally and have referred all to your website for the best information.
Thanks for making doing business with you easy and for providing a key ingredient the Christmas cheer of many. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and wish you all the best for the upcoming New Year.
All the Best, Steve
Thanks Steve !!
We are also hoping for a good year. Our goal for 2007 is to get distribution on the East Coast. With revenue generated from this part of the country we intend to help the folks at Clearwater Aquarium who are rehabilitating a little dolphin named "Winter" who lost her tail have being entangled in a lobster trap. I am going to get our "webmaster" working on our website and allow folks to purchase a case of Whale Tails Tortilla Chips off the website by using a credit card. Especially our new "Fans" in Oklahoma.
Thanks again for the nice comments. ~Ric

He Loves Whales...and your chips!
My name is Kit McBride. I’m an eighth grade student and live in Beverly, Massachusetts. Up until two weeks ago, all I wanted for Christmas was Peace On Earth and everywhere else. My father is in the Army and won’t be home this year for the holidays. Over the last few months, our school sold red white and blue ribbons in an effort to show our support. We took pictures and wrote letters and sent my Dad and several others a big box stuffed with all sorts of goodies including your chips that my Mom ordered from California. Mom said that he has always loved whales. He actually called us when he got the box and said that next to the pictures and letters, his favorite thing was your Whale Tails chips! He also said that there are a lot of ways to make a difference in the world and that your company is doing just that. So for Christmas, along with Peace on Earth, I would like to see Whale Tails Chips in the stores in my town. Thanks for making great chips, doing a really good thing and making my Dad smile.
~Kit
Thanks for the letter and inspiration. I’m sorry to hear that your Dad won’t be home for the holidays. I’m sure that he is extremely proud of you and your efforts to show your love and support. I wish I could tell you that life gets easier, but I will say that doing “the right thing” and following your heart is extremely rewarding. I hope you get your wish for Peace and that your father gets home soon. We will do everything we can to get our chips to the stores in your area. In the meantime, send us your Dad’s address and we’ll send him a case of chips to help keep that smile on his face. Happy Holidays…. ~Ric&Rick
All Salt Alike?
Hello Ric & Rick,
I just picked up some of your chips out of curiosity as I've never heard of Hawaiian Sea Salt. Due to traffic, I ate the chips on the way home. I was expecting the same old flavor and that the whole deal was a marketing ploy. I was pleasantly surprised at how good they were. The flavor is great and unlike anything else I've had! When I got home, I read your story as well as checked out the salt. Thanks for creating something truly special - I'm your newest fan! ~William Bennett
Santa Cruz, California
Thanks William,
Until we ran into Hawaiian Sea Salt, we always thought that all salt was alike. Not so! Sitting on the beach in Hawaii eating corn still sits in my memory as one of the best. Hawaiian Sea Salt is great in all kinds of foods but seems perfect with chips. Check out the Saltworks web site for info on where you can find it.

Chips at the Festival
Hello Rick,
I wanted you to know that the Whales Tails chips were a big hit at the Music Festival.
We sold almost all of them, and we offered some to the artists backstage. We definitely heard good comments about them and questions about where to find them for purchase from members of the audience.
Thanks and that's great to hear! Jackson strikes me as a "Down to Earth - Salsa & Chip Eating" sort of guy. I guess there was some momentary confusion on our end as to whether or not you actually received all of the boxes, but we got it cleared up. We really appreciate your efforts and wish you tremendous success on all of your projects. There's simply no substitute for a community that has their hearts and minds in the right place. We will keep you posted on our end and I look forward to next year and perhaps having the chance to make the show. In the meantime, don't hesitate to call if we can help in any way.
~Rick & Ric
PS. Please send a program and poster (if there's one left). We'll put it on our wall as a reminder that the Earth needs our help, on land as well as on the sea, and that there are great folks everywhere that care enough to get involved.
Magdalena Bay
You guys are awesome! I’ve been a potato chip guy my whole life guy and usually passed on the tortilla chips, salsa and yes, even guacamole. Yesterday I read a press release about your company and the donation to The Magdalena Baykeepers and I’m writing to say that I’ll be adding some Nachos from now on.
I’ve worked for many start-ups and my hat’s off to you guys for bringing your vision to life in such a short time. As a kid, my family and I camped at Magdalena Bay. We saw the whales, swam in the water and have some great memories of a truly special place that many people have never heard of.
Thanks for the reminder that we all can play a role… ~Brian Levenson
Santa Barbara, CA
Brian, I’m a potato chip lover myself, especially that new little number with goat cheese and roasted red pepper. In the interest of a more balanced diet, I’m glad to hear you’ll be adding some corn and Hawaiian Sea Salt..
Mag Bay is indeed a special place. I sailed through there in 1978 on a boat called Whistlewing. We were the lone anchor for one of the most amazing sunsets I’ve ever seen. I watched for a while and then threw my board over the side and shared some great little waves with at least 5,00 By-the-Wind-Sailors, a somewhat harmless species of jellyfish. The Magdalena Baykeepers are doing some great work and we’re extremely honored that we could help. ~Rick
MarineBio
Hi Rick,
Just wanted to let you know that I think what you guys are doing is a wonderful idea to raise awareness AND funds for marine conservation. Just wanted to let you know that I posted about Whale Tails in our blog today: marinebio.org/blog and will promote what you’re doing on our site: marinebio.org. We’re a nonprofit marine education and conservation organization with a strong web presence. We get an average of 300,000 visitors per month, so hopefully there will be a mad rush for Whale Tails where they’re available.
Keep up the good work and hope to see Whale Tails in Atlanta soon! ~Joni Joni Lawrence :: Editor MarineBio.org joni@marinebio.org
Got Chips Yet?
Hi,
My name is Jessie Lynndell and I live in Southern California but my family and me are spending the summer in Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts. It’s a cool place but the waves aren’t too good and I can’t find your chips in any of the stores!
Since we found Whale Tails, we’ve had nachos night every Friday. Usually my mom will get a movie that has something to do with the ocean or the environment and we all watch as a family and talk about how we can make better choices on how we live. It hasn’t been the same without Whale Tails. I’m writing you hoping that you can send some to us here on the island and to tell you that this would be a great place for your chips. There are lots of boats and from what I can tell, everyone here likes the ocean and whales a lot. I can even talk to some of the stores if you would like me too. I already know most of the people by name and I’m sure they would want to sell them. Let me know as soon as you can and thank you. ~Jessie Lyndell
Chilmark – Martha’s Vineyard
Jessie,
Thanks for the letter and sorry to hear about the surf. As far as the chips, we sent some to the East Coast almost a week ago but it’s a long drive. Ric left San Diego last Saturday in our delivery vehicle (see picture above) and we haven’t heard from him since. In retrospect I should have thought something was up when he suggested using his Hynson Red Fin as a rack. He’s always been easily sidetracked as far as the ocean’s concerned. In the meantime, we’ll send you enough chips to get your movie night on track and put smiles on the faces of your friends at the stores. They can always contact us if they would like to carry them. Have a great summer and say hi to James Taylor if you see him. ~Ric & Rick
Wholly Guacamole!
My name is Marion; I’m a mother of three young boys who until last weekend didn’t even want guacamole near them on the table. Last Saturday at the neighbor’s anniversary party I looked over to find my sons with a pile of Whale Tails, which I’d never seen. Their hands were covered in guacamole and according to our gracious hostess; they had already consumed several handfuls apiece. When I asked them what was going on, they replied that Whale Tails and “walkamoti” were their new favorite snack. We’ve been to your website and love your story and what you’re doing for whales. Thank you for providing such an inspiring and healthy alternative for our kids. My sister wants to know if your chips can be found in Colorado? ~Marion McCullough
DelMar, California
Thanks Marion, it’s fun to watch kids discover healthy alternatives and explore new foods. We’re with them on the “walkamoti” – It’s good stuff no matter how you spell it! We’re looking for a good distributor in Colorado but haven’t firmed anything up yet. In the meantime, have your sister email us and we’ll ship her some direct. ~Ric & Rick
I checked out your site and oh my, you've got a winner! Congratulations! What kid wouldn't want to eat them?
I'm sure you've got a well-oiled marketing machine, but there's a chain up here in the NW that seems like a natural fit for your chips. It's called, Wild Oats (it may be larger than just the NW, so don't quote me!)
Good luck, ~Ruth Musgrave and Jake, the SeaDog Whale Times
I just want to tell you how sensational I think your whole idea is! Love it, loved your site too.
We are doing whale-watching cruises starting Dec. 17th and I hope to start selling your chips at our snack bar on all our cruises. Can I get 3 cases? ~Rebecca Milkey

Hi Ric,
Thanks for keeping in touch with regards to the progress of "Whale Tails". I'm very excited for all of you. I know how much work it is to get something like this off the ground, so my hat's off to you!
Let me know when I can purchase my first bag at Whole Foods in Bellevue and I'll be there with bells on!
Congratulations! ~Milinda Dwyer

Hi Ric,
Your chips are very good! The "spice" is light and the salt has a nice twist to it. They are also "sturdy" chips that don't easily break into little pieces, which is great for dipping. I'll buy them when I see them in the store for sure, for their taste but of course also for the whale logo and your guys' cool story about the start of the chips...I like the concept of the whale tail being like a spoon for a dip so you don't need to double dip. I'm keeping some of the chips to dole out to friends.
I am really touched about your and Rick's idea of wanting to "give back" to the ocean environment...I’ll bet when you surf you've seen lots of bottlenose and??? surfing along side you. I’ve seen Humpbacks surfing big swells out off Molokini just prior to a storm. ~Mari

Hello Guys,
I normally don’t write letters but I must say that your chips were the hit of our son’s birthday party last weekend. Jake turned 8 and we, along with 12 of his friends, spent the whole day at Sea World in San Diego. We packed your chips with the lunches and couldn’t believe the response. Other kids asked where to get them so we gave them the empty bags with your website. You have at least 12 new fans. Congratulations on an awesome idea! ~Jim Stafford
Dear Ric -
Apologies for not writing you sooner. The Whale Tails Tortilla Chips
did indeed arrive - when I was in Baja for a few weeks, but I got to
enjoy them upon return. My friends and I thought they were quite
tasty, and loved the packaging. You should consider getting them into
some of the whale watch camps at San Ignacio Lagoon. Thanks again for
them.
Last weekend I was at a friend's house and noticed a really interesting bag of tortilla chips on his kitchen counter. To my great, good luck, it turned out that they'd already been opened, thereby saving me the trouble of having to find a way to sneak into the bag, eat a handful and somehow seal it back up, good as new. I stood there devouring your chips and thoroughly enjoying them, and then got to reading the info on the bag. What a great idea you have, making chips in the shape of a whale's tail and actually making sure some of the profits go back to protecting these amazing creatures. I just wanted to write and cheer you on. The chips are great; more like food than a snack, and your cause is even greater. Thanks for what you're doing, I'll definitely be sharing your product with all my friends. Where can I find them in Seattle? ~Michael Anthony
Orcas Island, Washington
I just visited your website and enjoyed it a lot. It’s cool, colorful, easy to read and full of great information. And your Whale Tails chips are great too. They truly are better for dipping...and their hearty flavor is so distinct. For years, our family has made a conscious effort to buy organic and support environmental causes. Your chips fit this philosophy perfectly, so we look forward to being able to pick them up from our local grocer.
Sincerely, ~Joanne Moring

From Cart to Heart.
I never thought that I would be writing a chip company but ‘your chips are awesome!’ My 8 year-old son wanted to buy them because of the graphics on the bag and I told him no, that we already had some chips at the house. In the spirit of compromise, weak negotiating skills and in order to avoid the usual “Supermarket Scene” they found their way into our cart. Before we got back to the car the bag was open and nearly gone – Wow! The texture is perfect and the seasoning is unlike anything else I’ve ever tasted. As we drove home, Danny read me your story on the back of the bag. Whale Tails is an excellent idea as well as a very inspiring story. See you on Wall Street and Oprah! You’re on our shelf and in our hearts!
PS - Where can I find Hawaiian Sea Salt and do you have a larger bag? ~Tim Miller – Encinitas, CA
Thanks Tim …
We like ‘em too. Tell Danny he made a wise choice and that we’re sending him a t-shirt we think he’ll like. You can find Hawaiian Sea Salt at www.saltworks.us and yes; we’re working on a larger bag. We’re thinking 9oz and hopefully before the end of summer. ~Rick & Ric
